       Carl Thompson的《旅行書寫》(Travel Writing)綜合整理近期重要的旅行書寫研究,並提出個人獨到的見解,是一部具有資料廣度與歷史縱深的優秀論著。作者藉由簡明的文字與清晰的理路讓讀者快速掌握1990年以降西方旅行書寫研究者所關注的課題:旅行書寫的定義、真實與虛構的辯證以及文本真實性的建構、旅行者的自我形塑、他者的再現、性別議題。在理論的耙梳之外,作者對於旅行書寫歷史的探討上溯西元前一千年下至二十世紀末(詳見第三章),直指每一時期作品的特性與主要關懷,突顯歷史脈絡的重要性。特別值得一提的是本書在正文之後附有精彩的名詞解釋與研究書目,名詞解釋涵蓋旅行書寫研究的重要詞彙,書目則廣納2010年以前重要的研究專書與論文,對於初涉獵旅行書寫研究的讀者具有入門指引的功能。

     《旅行書寫》的第一章探討旅行書寫在現今社會所扮演的角色:旅行書寫反映跨文化交流頻繁的全球化社會,抑或是懷舊情節的表徵?作者以無定論的爭議作為開場,彷彿要傳達中立客觀的態度,但這種客觀的姿態卻在學術論述的要求下宣告瓦解,作者在第二章〈界定此文類〉(“Defining the Genre”)就駁斥Paul Fussell的狹隘定義,提出自己較為廣泛的界說(請見第26頁)。

       儘管當代文學理論多半探討主體與主體性,但是後殖民理論框架內的旅行書寫研究則側重於他者再現的議題,因此本書的第六章〈再現他者〉(“Representing the Other”)就值得讀者細讀。作者細膩融會的理論詮釋替這個稍嫌陳腐的議題帶來新意,例如:作者闡述何以同時性的否定(a denial of coevaleness)是嚴重的謬誤,並將這個Johannes Fabian所提出的重要批評詞彙與民族學的現在式(ethnographic present)串聯(147-48)。此章節的另一個特色就是作者強調社會歷史脈絡,將他者再現區劃為三個範疇:殖民論述、新殖民論述(neo-colonial discourse)與後殖民論述(後兩者並時存在),在每一論述的討論中顧及旅行書寫的多樣歧異,並接納反論述(counter-discourse)的可能性。

      作者Carl Thompson目前任教於英國Nottingham Trent University,研究專長為浪漫時期旅行書寫,已出版專書The Suffering Traveller and the Romantic Imagination (2007),編纂Romantic-Era Shipwreck Narratives: An Anthology (2007)以及Shipwreck in Art and Literature: Images and Interpretations from Antiquity to the Present Day (2013)。Carl Thompson預計2015年出版Companion to Travel Writing,書中將有一部分處理華文旅行書寫,華文世界的讀者可以拭目以待。(歐美所訪問學人賴維菁小姐)
