ICPSR's Winter Byte

While the snow-sun- rain-repeat pattern here in Ann Arbor has confused our seasonal signs, the calendar confirms it is time for ICPSR’s winter edition of DataBytes!

The Temperature is Rising for the 2017 Summer Program!

Registration for the 2017 Summer Program is open. The four-week courses run June 26-July 21 and July 24-August 18. And, numerous three- to five-day workshops beginning in May are also in the mix!

DataLumos Illuminated and Ready for Data

ICPSR has joined widespread efforts to preserve valuable US government data that may be hard to find or inaccessible in the future. DataLumos launched on February 15 as a crowd-sourced repository where the public can archive government data resources, ensuring their long-term availability. For more information, please visit the announcement or review the DataLumos orientation webinar posted on ICPSR’s YouTube channel.

UX Testers Wanted!

ICPSR is remodeling its data infrastructure and user experience (UX) from the point of data deposit to point of access. The goal is to create a more intuitive UX with added data tools. Testing the UX will be paramount to achieving this goal over the course of the next several months. Interested in test-driving ICPSR’s UX? Register as an ICPSR UX test-driver here!

Heat up Your Winter Syllabus: Throw in some Data in the Classroom!

ICPSR's Teaching & Learning resources are full of standardized exercises to introduce data analysis within your substantive introductory courses, whether you want to change things up for a day or a week. Check out our Data-Driven Learning Guides where analyses are preset so students (and faculty!) can focus on content rather than mechanics of data analysis.>

The ORs are Coming – October 11-13!

Make the most of your membership in ICPSR and mark your calendars for the 2017 Biennial Meeting of ICPSR Official Representatives. With over 17 workshops and sessions in development, this biennial meeting will highlight ICPSR’s core functions, featuring current data collections and data-related tools and exciting new data projects. The meeting will also feature practical approaches and strategies to work with data producers to share data, write data management plans, steward discipline-focused repositories, and locate tools and resources to assist in curating and managing research data. Watch your emails for program information and the registration site available in late spring! The meeting is open to individuals from member institutions

Council News – Calling all Nominations

The ICPSR Council is preparing to bid farewell to six fellow members and welcome six new colleagues to the mix. To accomplish this task, ICPSR needs your suggestions. Please note that Council members must be from member institutions. Nominations should be sent to: councilnominees@icpsr.umich.edu by April 10, 2017.

Extending ICPSR's Hall of Fame

As part of its mission to support the social and behavioral sciences, ICPSR presents biennial awards to individuals who have distinguished themselves in their service to the social science and data communities. We invite you to help us identify the 2017 winners of the Warren E. Miller Award for Meritorious Service to the Social Sciences and the William H. Flanigan Award for Distinguished Service as an ICPSR Official Representative. Please email nominations to mf-awards@icpsr.umich.edu by April 30, 2017.

The ICPSR Bulletin – A Blizzard of Information

The most recent ICPSR Bulletin provides a flurry of news on the reshaping of ICPSR’s digital asset management system called Archonnex, ICPSR’s 2016 Innovator of the year, and much more.

Is your Institution's OR/DR Information Current?

The new calendar year often brings announcements of retirements and staff changes. While we have received notifications of several changes to our official and designated representatives, we are certain that still more are out there! Please take a moment to review the OR/DR listed for your organization. Need an update? Email us at help@icpsr.umich.edu. Please be sure to send the updated name, email address, and full contact information, and we’ll do the rest!

Many Firsts for ICPSR's New Director!

ICPSR's Director, Margaret Levenstein reflects on being first female and economist to direct ICPSR. Read the full interview.
